PARIS, France – The Philippines joins over 100 countries in calling for a deal that recognizes 1.5 degrees Celsius global temperature limit and five- year review cycles.
Philippine delegation spokesperson Antonio La Viña, confirmed to Filipino journalists of its participation after holding discussions with “big and small countries” as they move closer in finalizing the draft of an agreement here at the United Nations climate change summit which started Monday last week.
The so-called ‘High Ambition Coalition’ group, which was launched at the summit includes the United States, the European Union member states, Africa, Asia, Pacific and the Caribbean countries.
“ In the last stage of the negotiation, it is important to be part of a group that cuts across developed and developing countries,” La Viña said.
He said Climate Change Commission Secretary Emmanuel de Guzman will attend the next meeting of the coalition today.
The High Ambition Coalition is not an official negotiating bloc at COP. Major developing countries like China and India, and developed country like Australia has not joined the coalition.
A new draft agreement is set to be released anytime today at the Paris Committee.
